Following SSU investigation, traitor who ‘leaked’ routes of AFU trains to GRU chatbot sentenced to 15 years in prison

Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, another agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’) has been convicted to 15 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. He spied on the echelons of the Defense Forces in Kharkiv and Sumy regions.

The perpetrator is a 42-year-old assistant locomotive engineer at a regional branch of Ukrzaliznytsia [Ukrainian Railways] who was recruited by the 78th GRU intelligence centre.

The agent recorded the direction of movement of Ukrainian troops’ freight trains directly from the cab of his locomotive and then reported the intelligence to a GRU chatbot.

In this way, the enemy tried to establish logistical routes for supply of weapons and ammunition to the frontline.

During his trips, the traitor also walked around the area, trying to identify the locations of fortifications and reserve command posts.

The SSU Counterintelligence detained him in Sumy region in the summer of 2024, when he was preparing to pass a new portion of data to the occupiers.

The investigation also established that the man had published comments on Telegram channels denying russia’s armed aggression.

Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, the panel of judges found the accused guilty under two Articles of the CCU:

  • 111.2 (high treason, committed under martial law);
  • 436-2.1 (denial of russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine).

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Kharkiv region under the procedural supervision of the Regional Prosecutor's Office.
