Following SSU investigation, GRU agent who adjusted missile strikes on Vinnytsia and Sumy sentenced to 15 years in prison
Based on evidence collected by the Security Service of Ukraine, another agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’) has been sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property. He was detained in the autumn of 2024 in the border area of Sumy region.
The investigation established that the perpetrator was tracking the locations of the Defence Forces in the north-eastern region, which the ruscists were planning to strike with missiles and artillery.
The enemy agent turned out to be a contract soldier from one of Ukraine’s military units who had been recruited by GRU and had left his place of service without permission.
After fleeing his permanent deployment location, the deserter began looking for quick money on Telegram. There, he came to the GRU’s attention, which promised him money in exchange for cooperation.
Initially based in Vinnytsia region, the agent walked around the area and tracked the positions of radar stations and mobile groups defending the region’s airspace.
The occupiers planned to use this intelligence to prepare new missile and drone attacks on local critical infrastructure, evading Ukrainian air defenses.
Later, the agent was sent to Sumy region, where he rented an apartment near the russian border for two weeks.
There, he posed as a ‘soldier on duty’ to gain the trust of local population. In this way, he hoped to gather information about the bases of Ukrainian defenders.
The traitor was also supposed to burn relay cabinets on the railway to complicate transport logistics to the front line.
The SSU identified the perpetrator and detained him.
Based on the evidence collected by SSU investigators, the accused was found guilty under three Articles of the CCU:
- 111.2 (high treason, committed under martial law);
- 113.2 (sabotage, committed under martial law);
- 408.4 (desertion, committed under martial law).
The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Vinnytsia region under the procedural supervision of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for the Southern Region.
