Following SSU investigation, agent of belarusian KGB sentenced to 15 years in prison for spying on Ukraine’s northern borders

Based on evidence collected by the Security Service of Ukraine, an agent of belarusian state security committee, uncovered in July this year in Volyn, has been convicted to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The investigation established that the perpetrator was collecting data on the defence of Ukraine’s northern border for the foreign intelligence service.

The belarusian intelligence was trying to obtain information on the location of checkpoints and fortifications of the Defence Forces as well as routes and transit stops of military echelons.

To collect this data, the KGB recruited a 24-year-old local unemployed man who was seeking easy money on Telegram.

Lured by the promise of quick payments, the agent began tracking the locations of Ukrainian defenders in the region.

He walked in the border area and recorded the coordinates of military installations on Google Maps.

The SSU identified the spy at an early stage, documented his crimes, and detained him.

A smartphone with an anonymous chat in a messenger app was seized during the search. He used the phone to contact the belarusian KGB. His handler’s identity has been established by the SSU Counterintelligence.

Following the SSU’s investigation, the court found the accused guilty under Articles 28.2 and 111.2 of the CCU – high treason, committed by a group, upon prior conspiracy, under martial law.

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Volyn region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
