Following SSU investigation, enemy informant sentenced to 12 years in prison for spying on Defense Forces ships near Mykolaiv port

Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, a traitor who collected intelligence on the Defense Forces near the Black Sea has been convicted to 12 years of imprisonment.

The SSU cyber units detained him at his home in Mykolaiv in early 2024 after he returned from a reconnaissance sortie.

According to the investigation, the man spied on port bases and raid directions of the Armed Forces and the State Border Guard Service battle ships.

The occupiers also hoped to obtain from the informant the geolocations of backup command posts of Ukrainian units performing tasks at the front line.

The enemy agent was a local unemployed man who came to the aggressor’s attention because of his anti-Ukrainian comments on Telegram.

After recruitment, the asset began to walk around the coastal area of the port city and record locations of Ukrainian defenders, marking the coordinates on Google maps.

A mobile phone, which the spy used to contact his handler, an officer of one of russia’s special services, was seized during searches.

The court sentenced the accused to a maximum term of imprisonment under the Articles of the CCU:

  • 114-2.3 (unauthorized dissemination of information on sending, movement of weapons, transfer, movement or location of the AFU, committed under martial law);
  • 436-2.1, 436-2.3 (justification, recognition as legitimate, denial of russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, glorification of its participants).

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Mykolaiv region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
