Following SSU investigation, enemy agent sentenced to 10 years in prison for arson on Ukrainian railways in Zhytomyr region

Based on evidence collected by the Security Service of Ukraine, an enemy agent, detained for arson in Zhytomyr oblast in September 2024, has been convicted to prison.

On orders from russian intelligence services, the perpetrator destroyed relay cabinets of signalling installations on the main lines of Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian railways).

Through these acts of sabotage, the ruscists hoped to disrupt the logistics of rail freight transportation through the northern region of Ukraine.

The investigation established that the arsonist was a 35-year-old contract soldier who had deserted his military unit and was hiding in Berdychiv district.

While looking for easy money on Telegram, he came to the attention of russian intelligence services.

Lured by the promise of quick payments, the agent agreed to set fire to critical infrastructure facilities in the border region.

First, he found a relay cabinet and agreed its destruction with his handler.

After that, the man purchased 1.5 litres of gasoline, then rode to the site by bicycle and set fire to the railway electrical equipment.

The law enforcement team apprehended him at his home, where he was trying to hide from justice.

A smartphone, on which the traitor recorded the arson for a report for the russian intelligence, was seized.

Based on the SSU’s investigation, the court found the accused guilty under Articles 28.2 and 113.2 of the CCU – sabotage, committed by a group, upon prior conspiracy, under martial law.

Given his cooperation with the investigation, the court sentenced him to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Zhytomyr region jointly with the National Police under the procedural supervision of Zhytomyr Specialised Defence Prosecutor’s Office of the Central Region.
