SSU detains belarusian spy attempting to infiltrate Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (video)
The Security Service, together with the Internal Security Department of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, prevented a belarusian KGB agent from infiltrating the Ukrainian Defence Forces.
As a result of a multi-stage special operation in Kyiv, a deep-cover operative, who had been working for the KGB since 2015, has been detained. Back in 2020, she was deployed from Minsk to Ukraine to operate as an agent.
At that time, the spy was already under on the SSU’s radar, and her intelligence activities were being documented.
As established by the investigation, the tasks of the hostile intelligence entity were carried out by a 35-year-old citizen of the republic of belarus. She operated under a journalist’s cover and worked for some time as a correspondent for Viktor Medvedchuk’s Channel 112 in the the former USSR states.
After Medvedchuk’s channels were shut down, the belarusian KGB, in coordination with belarus’s senior military and political leadership, sent the agent to Ukraine.
Before the start of the full-scale war, she got a job at one of the leading media outlets in our country. She used the job and her colleagues’ connections to expand her personal contacts among Ukrainian politicians, military personnel, and foreign diplomats.
During the full-scale war, her handler instructed her to travel to one of the EU countries for additional instructions. The woman crossed the border under the false pretext of undergoing a medical examination.
To contact the belarusian intelligence handler in the EU, the spy purchased a new smartphone with a burner SIM and then disposed of the phone.
During the briefing, she was tasked with gathering information on citizens of belarus and russia who are assisting Ukraine in its fight against the aggressor state.
The agent was also instructed by the belarusian KGB to establish informal contacts with officials of the Chinese Embassy in our country to gather intelligence on the activities of Chinese diplomats in Ukraine.
After her return to Kyiv, the agent tried to get a job at one of the headquarters units of Ukraine’s military intelligence. At this point, the perpetrator was flagged by the DIU Internal Security Department.
Thanks to the timely exposure, the SSU and the DIU began a long-term intelligence ‘game’ with the belarusian agent. This allowed to document her every move and to regularly feed false data to the belarusian services.
In particular, the foreign service was redirected to copy fake ‘secret information’ that was deliberately circulated around the spy.
Among other things, the investigation documented her attempts to find candidates for recruitment to the KGB agent network.
Having gathered a large amount of evidence on the spy, the SSU, in cooperation with the DIU, detained her near her home. A smartphone and a voice recorder, on which she recorded classified information, were seized.
SSU investigators have notified the detainee of suspicion under Article 114.1 of the CCU (espionage). The suspect is in custody and faces up to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
The special operation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
