SSU detains GRU agent near Pokrovsk guiding russian artillery strikes at Ukrainian positions
The SSU Counterintelligence has detained another agent of russian military intelligence, the GRU, in Donetsk region. The perpetrator was adjusting russian airstrikes against Ukrainian Defence Forces near Pokrovsk.
The enemy’s primary targets were fortified areas and artillery positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which are keeping russian assault groups under fire control.
If they had the coordinates, the occupiers planned to carry out precision strikes against them using available weaponry, including 1.5-ton guided aerial bombs.
The SSU thwarted the aggressor’s plans, identified the agent early, and detained him. Simultaneously, action was taken to secure the locations of Ukrainian troops.
As the investigation established, an unemployed resident of Dobropillia, recruited by the GRU, was responsible for guiding the aerial bombs. He came to russia’s attention when he posted pro-kremlin comments on Telegram.
After the recruitment, the agent drove around the Pokrovsk area and, identifying military facilities, conducted reconnaissance to take photos and mark their geolocations on Google Maps.
The traitor remained in constant contact with a GRU handler. His identity has already been established by the SSU Counterintelligence.
A smartphone, which the asset used to communicate with the GRU via a messaging app, was seized from him during the search.
SSU investigators notified the detainee of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).
The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out by the SSU Main Directorate in Donetsk and Luhansk regions under the procedural supervision of Donetsk Region Prosecutor’s Office.
