SSU detains GRU spotter in Rivne region
The SSU Counterintelligence has apprehended another agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’) in Rivne. He turned out to be a former factory worker from Donetsk oblast who had been recruited by the enemy and had travelled to western Ukraine to guide russian airstrikes.
According to the investigation, the individual was spotted by the GRU when, after being laid off, he sought ‘easy money’ on Telegram.
Soon after, the agent received a task from his russian handler to travel to Rivne region to identify coordinates of potential ‘targets’.
The russian military intelligence intended to target enterprises of Ukraine’s defence-industrial complex and locations of Ukrainian military personnel.
Upon arriving in Rivne, the agent checked into a local hotel. Each time after receiving instructions from a GRU officer, he used a taxi for reconnaissance trips.
During these trips, the traitor took photos of facilities he suspected were fulfilling defence contracts or serving as military bases.
The asset attempted to identify the locations of the AFU mobile air defence groups, radar stations, and air defence missile systems protecting the western region.
The SSU documented the agent’s crimes and apprehended him as he was photographing the facade of a facility with his phone camera.
During his arrest, a smartphone was seized from him containing the coordinates of targets on Google Maps, which he intended to transmit to the GRU.
SSU investigators have notified the detainee of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU – high treason, committed under martial law.
The suspect is in custody without bail and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Rivne region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
