SSU detains former ‘Berkut’ officer who passed intelligence on Ukrainian combat positions in Donetsk region to enemy

In the course of counter-sabotage efforts in the frontline areas of Donetsk region, the SSU detained another enemy accomplice.

The offender is a former employee of the disbanded ‘Berkut’ special militia unit, who supported russian invaders when the full-scale invasion began.

After February 24, 2022, he began, at his own initiative, to collect information on locations and movement of Ukrainian Defence Forces near the towns of Hirnyk and Krasnohorivka.

To do this, the ex-law enforcer drove around the area and covertly surveilled Ukrainian troops.

The agent sent the collected data to his daughter in the temporarily occupied Sevastopol in the form of text messages in a messenger app.

The woman passed the information to her friend, a member of russian occupation troops in the Crimea.

The enemy needed the intelligence to prepare and carry out missile strikes on Ukrainian targets.

In addition, the agent offered his daughter’s ‘friend’ assistance in conducting sabotage against the AFU.

For this purpose, he asked to provide him with appropriate weapons and ammunition.

During the detention, the SSU found and seized form the suspect a mobile phone and symbols of the DNR terrorist organization.

Based on the collected evidence, SSU investigators notified him of suspicion of collaboration (Article 111-1.7 of the CCU).

Court chose custody as a measure of restraint.

The investigation is ongoing.

The SSU Office in Donetsk and Luhansk regions carried out the operation under the procedural supervision of Donetsk Region Prosecutor’s Office.
