SSU detains UOC-MP cleric who agreed to spy for FSB in Donetsk region in exchange for his family’s evacuation to russia

In Donetsk oblast, the SSU Counterintelligence has apprehended another agent of russia’s federal security service. He is a 58-year-old archpriest of Pokrovsk vicariate of moscow patriarchate’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church who adjusted russian strikes on Ukrainian defenders.

According to the investigation, the cleric was recruited by the FSB through his daughter, who lives in russia and wrote a letter to putin asking for russian citizenship for her mother and sister from Ukraine.

After the letter was sent to the kremlin, the priest was remotely contacted by an officer of the russian special service.

In exchange for cooperation, the handler promised the agent to ‘evacuate’ his family to russia, grant the citizenship of the aggressor state and provide financial support for some time.

Having agreed to the ‘offer’, the asset began to collect information on locations of reserve command posts, fortifications and logistics centers of Ukrainian troops in Volnovakha district.

Using his coordinates, the occupiers planned to use an arsenal of military munitions against the Defence Forces: guided aerial bombs, rocket weapons and cannon artillery.

The SSU thwarted the enemy’s intentions and detained the traitor, preventing him from sending a ‘report’ with intelligence to the FSB.

A mobile phone with evidence of his work for the aggressor was seized during searches.

Based on the evidence, SSU investigators served the detained priest a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed by a group, under martial law).

The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Donetsk and Luhansk regions under the procedural supervision of Donetsk Region Prosecutor’s Office.
