SSU detains foreigner preparing double terrorist attack in Kyiv on russia’s behalf

The SSU Military Counterintelligence has foiled another terrorist attack in Kyiv. Due to proactive measures, an enemy agent who was preparing two explosions in the capital has been detained.

The perpetrator was initially supposed to plant an improvised explosive device under a Ukrainian soldier’s car. After that, he was to remotely detonate the bomb when the victim approached the vehicle. After emergency services arrived at the scene, another explosive device planted nearby was supposed to go off.

The Security Service uncovered russia’s plan at an early stage and detained the suspect at his home when he was equipping the IEDs with mobile phones for remote activation.

According to the investigation, the attack was prepared by a handyman from the South Caucasus who had been recruited by ruscists and had been living in Kyiv for a long time. He came to their attention when looking for ‘easy money’ on Telegram.

After remote recruitment, the foreigner received instructions from the russian intelligence services on how to make bombs from improvised means.

He ordered the necessary components for the bombs online and, after synthesizing the chemical components, placed them in a food container.

The agent was then to approach the parked car after dark and place one of the bombs under the hood and the other – nearby.

An IED and components for its manufacture, a mobile phone with evidence of cooperation with the aggressor state and combat grenades were seized from the suspect during the search.

The detainee has been notified of suspicion under Articles 14.1 and 258.2 of the CCU (preparation for a terrorist act).

The decision on additional charges against the foreigner for illegal handling of combat supplies and manufacturing an explosive device is pending.

The suspect faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out under the procedural supervision of Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.
