SSU detains GRU agent helping ruscists in new attempts to break through to Kupiansk

The Security Service of Ukraine has detained another agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’) in Kharkiv region. The perpetrator was preparing coordinates for russian missile and bomb attacks in Kupiansk sector.

The ruscists hoped to use the data from their spotter to prepare new attempts to break through to Kupiansk.

As the investigation established, russia’s tasks were carried out by a 49-year-old Kharkiv resident recruited by the enemy. He was hiding from mobilisation at his parents’ house in Chuhuiv district.

He came to the GRU’s attention when he was searching Telegram channels for ways to flee to the aggressor state.

In one of the pro-kremlin chats, a GRU officer approached the individual and offered him cooperation in exchange for ‘evacuation’.

Having agreed to the offer, the agent began to walk the frontline area to identify and mark the geolocations of the Defence Forces on Google Maps.

The perpetrator also used the yard of his parents’ private house as an observation point from which he recorded the time and approximate directions of Ukrainian artillery.

After that, he conducted reconnaissance near the places where, in his opinion, Ukrainian artillery positions could be located.

He stored the coordinates of potential ‘targets’ on his smartphone to prepare a ‘report’ for his GRU handler.

The SSU apprehended the traitor and took action to protect the locations of the Defence Forces.

His mobile phone with evidence of working for the aggressor state was seized during the search.

SSU investigators have notified the detainee of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The suspect is in custody without bail and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Kharkiv region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
