The Security Service’s Counterintelligence Department and the National Police detained two residents of Lviv region, in hot pursuit, for carrying out a terrorist attack near the Stryi District Territorial Recruitment Centre administrative building on 17 September this year.

The investigation revealed that the suspects had thrown an improvised explosive device onto the grounds of the office. A serviceman at the facility was injured in the incident.

The perpetrators drove up to the District TRC in their own car, and one of them threw the bomb out of the vehicle’s window onto the car park near the building. They then hurriedly left the scene.

Subsequently, whilst a member of TRC staff was examining the explosive device, it detonated, causing serious injury to the serviceman.

According to the investigation, the perpetrators are two 48- and 41-year-old residents of the Mykolaiv district in the Lviv region.

During a search of one of the suspects’ homes, the law enforcement team found two additional explosive devices. These were seized and sent for forensic analysis.

SSU investigators have notified the detainees of their status as suspects under Article 258.2 of the CCU (terrorist act, by a group, by prior conspiracy).

The investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the offence, including the involvement of the russian intelligence services in the crime.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in the Lviv region in conjunction with the National Police, under the procedural supervision of the Lviv Specialised Defence Prosecutor’s Office in the Western Region.
