SSU and National Police detain two minors who committed terrorist attack in Zhytomyr on russia’s orders
The Security Service of Ukraine and National Police have apprehended two enemy agents who carried out a terrorist attack in Zhytomyr on the evening of 5 August.
The attack involved the detonation of an improvised explosive device in one of the city’s neighbourhoods. One man was killed and another was hospitalized in serious condition.
The investigation established that the attack was prepared by a 17-year-old student at a local vocational school and her peer, who had been recruited by the enemy. Both came to the aggressor’s attention while looking for easy money on Telegram.
After recruitment, the minors received instructions from a russian handler, according to which they made the explosive devices from improvised means. For secrecy, the agents bought components for the IEDs in different shops and local markets.
For maximum damage, they filled the bombs with nuts and bolts and equipped them with a mobile phone with remote access for russian special services for remote detonation.
The perpetrators then planted the explosives at coordinates they received from their handler via a messenger app.
At the site of the planned attack, the agents hid a phone camera, through which the occupiers tracked the victims’ arrival at the location and activated the IEDs.
SSU investigators notified the detainees of suspicion under Article 258.3 of the CCU (terrorist act resulting in death).
A motion has been filed with the court to impose a measure of restraint in the form of detention.
The suspects face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Zhytomyr region in cooperation with the National Police under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
