SSU and National Police charge russian prison official in absentia for torturing Ukrainian PoWs
The Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police of Ukraine have collected evidence against another ruscist involved in the torture of captured servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to the investigation, the suspect is an inspector at ‘penal colony No. 1’ in russia’s Tula region. His identity is currently withheld due to procedural restrictions.
Investigators established that between May 2022 and February 2023, the inspector, acting both independently and in coordination with other personnel, participated in the torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war held at the facility.
The evidence shows that he regularly beat detainees with a PR-73M rubber baton, striking their legs, arms, head, and other parts of the body. He also subjected them to repeated psychological abuse, including threats of further violence.
These actions constitute a serious violation of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War, which prohibits torture and inhumane treatment of prisoners of war.
Investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine have notified the prison official of suspicion in absentia under Article 438.1 of the CCU (cruel treatment of prisoners of war and violations of the laws and customs of war as defined by international treaties).
Although the suspect remains in the territory of the aggressor state, efforts to bring him to justice are underway.
The investigation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
