SSU and National Police detain enemy agent who committed terrorist attack in Zhytomyr region
The SSU Counterintelligence and the National Police have detained an enemy agent in hot pursuit after he carried out a terrorist attack in Zhytomyr oblast on the evening of September 14.
The attack involved the detonation of an improvised explosive device in one of the districts of Korostyshiv. A 34-year-old local resident was killed as a result of the incident.
The law enforcement detained the perpetrator within 8 hours after the attack.
The enemy agent turned out to be a 31-year-old drug-addicted resident of Zhytomyr, recruited by russian special services on Telegram channels, where he was looking for money.
In exchange for the promise of quick money, the individual agreed to prepare the attack. For secrecy, the agent first rented an apartment in Zhytomyr. Under the guise of household purchases, he acquired components to manufacture an improvised explosive device.
Following the occupiers’ instructions, he manufactured the IED, equipped it with a mobile phone for remote detonation, and disguised it as a fire extinguisher.
After that, the agent hid the bomb in a cache, covered it with rubbish, and sent the coordinates to his handler.
In order for the ruscists to track the victim’s arrival at the planned site and activate the IED, the agent installed a remote-access camera opposite the cache.
A smartphone with evidence of his contacts with the russian special services was seized from the suspect during searches.
SSU investigators have notified him of suspicion under Article 258.3 of the CCU (terrorist act resulting in death).
The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Zhytomyr region in cooperation with the National Police under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
